Chipped Tooth

Chipped Tooth

Maybe it was the way you landed when you scored that winning goal. Or the way you clenched your teeth the last time the stock market tumbled. It might even have been the left hook you received during that barroom brawl. However you chipped your tooth, the story of what happened is no doubt priceless.

Still, that little chip can lower the value of your million-dollar smile. And if that chipped condition is close to a major knockout, you'll want to visit your dentist soon to make sure those pearly whites don't depreciate even more. (If there is throbbing pain or swelling, seek professional help immediately.),

Often, however, the little chipper is just an annoyance: It feels rough against your tongue. And every time tongue meets tooth, you wish the surface action were smooth again. If you can't see your dentist right away, here's what you can do to smooth the rough edges.

File it carefully. A plain emery board, available at any drugstore, can be used to file the jagged edge, says Douglas Brown, D.D.S., a dentist in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. "Of course, you have to be careful not to file too much--only a couple of strokes would be enough to smooth the tooth's broken edge so that it's not sharp to your tongue." Dr. Brown recommends that you do the filing in front of a mirror, so you can see what you're doing.

Give it a quick fix. "A product called Dentemp, sold at any drugstore, is specially made for situations where you chipped a back tooth or lost a filling and can't get to the dentist right away," says Allen R. Crawford, Jr., D.M.D., a dentist in Macungie, Pennsylvania. "It instantly makes the tooth feel smooth, so you don't cut yourself"

Dentemp also acts as an insulator against hot and cold. That's important, because the nerve in a chipped tooth can transmit a lot of pain when you bite into very hot or cold foods.
