FALLS
If an infant or toddler doesn't start to use an injured arm or leg within hours of a fall or he or she continues to cry when the injured area is touched, assume the child has a broken bone. Take the following measures.
* Call for emergency medical help.
* Don't move the child unless the injured limb is immobilized. If you know first aid, splint the limb in the position you found it.
* Keep your child still while you wait for help to arrive.
* Do not try to straighten or test a misshapen bone or joint.
* Do not give your child anything to eat or drink.
* If the injury involves an open wound, do not blow on it, wash it or probe it. Cover the wound with sterile dressings.
* Take steps to prevent shock. If you can do so without moving the limb or causing pain, raise the child's feet 8 to 12 inches. Cover him with a blanket.
Caution: Do not attempt to move a child whom you suspect to have a neck injury. Call for help. (You should cover the child with a blanket while you're waiting for help to arrive.)
