Making the Most of Your Remedy
Here are a few things you can do to enhance the effectiveness of a homeopathic remedy.
First, keep your remedy in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and temperatures higher than 100°F. Avoid exposing the remedy to strong odors such as perfumes or mothballs, which can decrease its effectiveness, says Dana Ullman, author of Discovering Homeopathy and Homeopathic Medicine for Children and Infants and founder and president of the Foundation for Homeopathic Education and Research in Berkeley, California.
Steer clear of coffee, because many remedies are adversely affected by the essential oils in coffee that give the beverage its flavor, says Maesimund Panos, M.D., a homeopathic physician in Tipp City, Ohio, and co-author with Jane Heimlich of Homeopathic Medicine at Home.
Avoid using lip balms, facial creams and other products containing camphor while taking a remedy, because on rare occasions, camphor can wipe out the remedy's effectiveness, Ullman says.
Don't use mint-flavored toothpastes or mouthwashes for at least an hour before and after you take a remedy, says Richard D. Fischer, D.D.S., a dentist and homeopath in Annandale, Virginia, and president of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. Like camphor, mint can be an antidote to a remedy. Homeopathic toothpastes that contain ingredients safe to use with remedies are available in many health food stores.
Avoid using electric blankets, because they may cause slight disturbances in the body's nervous system that can make it harder for a remedy to work, Ullman says. "It's a rare complication, but a few homeopaths have noticed that for some unknown reason, remedies are antidoted by electric blankets," he says.
Take no more than three doses of a remedy in a day unless directed by your homeopath, says Deborah Gordon, M.D., a homeopathic physician in Ashland, Oregon. Stop taking the remedy when you begin to feel better, because excessive doses of a homeopathic medicine can actually revive the symptoms you're trying to corral.
