How to Perform An Enema

How to Perform an Enema

A traditional water remedy for everything from constipation to migraine headaches, an enema cleanses the lower colon and can often provide pain relief when other methods fail, says Agatha Thrash, M.D., a medical pathologist and co-founder and co-director of Uchee Pines Institute, a natural healing center in Seale, Alabama. Enemas are also used in conjunction with fasting to encourage the elimination of toxins released during the fast.

To prepare an enema, fill an enema bag (available in most pharmacies) with lukewarm water--from 1/2 to 1 quart for a child ten years of age or older to no more than 2 quarts for an adult, suggests Dr. Thrash. Use one pint for younger children. Never give children under ten years of age more than one enema a day, since water can be absorbed and can cause blood sodium to drop dangerously low (a condition known as hyponatremia). Take the enema while sitting on the toilet. First, lubricate the anus and the end of the enema tubing with lotion or oil. Hold the bag about three feet above you and insert the tubing into the anus about 11/2 to 2 inches deep. Holding the tubing in place, slowly release the valve to let the water enter the colon. Hold the solution in for several minutes, then release into the toilet.
