Homeopathic First Aid: The Ten Essential Remedies
Your daughter limps home with a nasty bruise on her leg after taking a dive on her bicycle. So you search through your conventional first-aid kit for something to stop the swelling and ease her pain.
There are bandages, antiseptic cream and a few packages of aspirin. Pretty standard stuff. For something a little different, homeopaths suggest stocking your medicine cabinet with a few of their essential remedies.
"I think everyone in the United States should have a homeopathic first-aid kit and homeopathic first-aid book," says Jacquelyn Wilson, M.D., a homeopathic physician in San Diego. "You can use that kit as an initial treatment for almost any illness, even while you're waiting for an ambulance to arrive."
Homeopathic first-aid kits containing from 20 to 40 remedies are available in many health food stores. But you can also create your own kit. Here are 10 basic remedies that should be in every home, according to Maesimund Panos, M.D., a homeopathic physician in Tipp City, Ohio, and co-author with Jane Heimlich of Homeopathic Medicine at Home. Warning: For first-aid treatment, do not give a person doses higher than 30X or 30C without consulting a homeopath.
The plant, animal or mineral compound each remedy is derived from is listed in parentheses.
* Aconite (monkshood) is a good remedy for the early stages of swelling or fever. A person who needs Aconite may feel fearful and restless and crave cold drinks.
* Apis (honeybee) soothes bee stings and other insect bites.
* Arnica (leopard's bane) relieves bruises and muscle soreness.
* Arsenicum (arsenic) is the most commonly needed remedy for upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea and food poisoning.
* Belladonna (deadly nightshade) commonly helps people who have sore throats, coughs, headaches, earaches or fevers. The person who needs this remedy may appear flushed and feel hot and restless.
* Gelsemium (yellow jasmine) often relieves flus, head colds and tension headaches.
* Ipecacuanha (ipecac root) relieves nausea and can also halt a bad bloody nose or bleeding from any part of the body.
* Ledum (marsh tea) is a common remedy for puncture wounds, bites and stings and can also help eye injuries and ankle sprains.
* Nux Vomica (poison nut) is a wonderful hangover remedy.
* Ruta (rue) helps heal sprains and sore bones. If Arnica doesn't relieve your bruised, lame feeling after a fall, try Ruta.
